Recently heard of amazing maths site www.smartkiddies.co.nz Have had a look through but wondering if other schools use this site. Would like to know if you actually join up as a whole school or just as individual classes. Also how have you used this site both in class and as a home learning tool?

I went to look at the website as a result of your comment. I am now using it with my maths class - to great effect. Children are competing against each other to gain rewards both in spare time at school and at home.
ReplyDeleteWhen you sign your class up, they are allocated a username and password. They can use the site free during school hours and up to two activities at home every night.
The brilliant thing is that as the teacher I can allocate the tasks that support our class learning and at the appropriate level. I can also look at who has completed what and how many the got correct.
The children are highly motivated as they earn points that then allow them to buy different items for their avatar, like a new t-shirt, glasses or different hair-do. Their tasks range from an explanation video, games to support the skill and competitions against peers before completing the assessment task.
We have been using it for two weeks now and there is no let-up on the demand for using the programme in any spare minute of the day! I have never had my kids so excited about doing maths. Long may it continue.
I have seen this working in Allana's Year 5/6 class, and also in a Year 3/4 class and can attest to how motivating it is.
